Description

Sherline 4400/4410-DRO - 17" Lathe with Factory Installed Digital Readout (DRO)

Any Sherline lathe can be ordered with a digital readout installed. Special handwheels with built-in encoders are installed in place of the standard handwheels on the crosslide and leadscrew. These handwheels are connected to a display box that translates handwheel rotation into a readout of table position to within .0005" (or .01 mm). In addition, a constant readout of spindle RPM is displayed.

Standard equipment is the same as on the model 4000 (4100 metric) which includes:

  • Digital Readout (DRO)
  • 90 VDC motor with electronic speed controller
  • 2.75" (70mm) x 6.0" (152mm) crosslide
  • 24" (610mm) bed that has 17" (431mm) between centers
  • standard 1-5/8" (41mm) laser engraved aluminum handwheels
  • 2.5" (63mm) resettable “zero” handwheel on the leadscrew
  • two 2" (51mm) resettable “zero” handwheels on the crosslide
  • feed screw and a rocker tool post (P/N 3057) substituted for the standard tool post used on the shortbed lathes
  • pulleys, belt, faceplate, lathe dog,and two dead centers
  • three hexagonal keys
  • tool post
  • sharpened high-speed steel cutting tool
  • eight foot three-wire power cord
  • instruction booklet

The advantage of a digital readout is that you no longer need to count handwheel rotations when moving distances longer than a single revolution. This helps eliminate math errors. The large, easy-to-read display reads out to 3 and a half decimal places to give accuracy to within .0005". The display for each axis can be reset to zero at any time with the push of a button. Backlash values can be set for each axis in the programming so that backlash is electronically eliminated when changing direction of handwheel rotation. A third axis is available on the display box should you later decide to add a vertical milling column or use it on a Sherline 3-axis mill. The readout can function with inch or metric lathes. In the metric mode, the position reads out to 1/100 of a millimeter. (NOTE: The unit does not translate dimensions from inch to metric. It must be initialized to work with the pitch of the leadscrew to which the handwheel is attached.)

*NOTE: This dimension was determined by measuring the extruded bases that were supplied when we first took over production in the USA from the former Australian manufacturer. The base and several other parts were cast to match this angle and it was not economically feasible at the time to change it to an easier-to-manufacture 60 degrees. The original 55-degree angle was determined by a reference to Machinery's Handbook, Vol. 17 as the ideal angle to cut a dovetail. When we took over production, a fixture was produced in-house to duplicate the existing angle which had changed slightly from the original 55° to an actual 55.5°. This fixture became the "standard", and every machine built since the early 1970's has been measured against this same fixture. The older brass beds and the current steel beds as well as the parts that fit them are all ground to this same angle.

Sherline Lathe Dimensions

The drawing below shows the key dimensions on a Sherline Model 4000 lathe. It is provided to help those who wish to make special equipment to fit to your lathe. If you wish to download a higher quality version of the drawing, it is also available using the link below. Note that the longer 4400-series version of the lathe has a taller cast base for more rigidity. It is 0.33" taller overall and 9" longer.

MOTOR TORQUE CURVE

NOTE: Electronic circuitry built into the speed control supplies a constant 90 VDC output to the motor regardless of the input current from 100VAC to 240VAC, 50 or 60 Hz, so Sherline machines can be plugged in and used in any country in the world without a transformer as long as you have the correct wall plug converter..

USE WITH AN INVERTER: This motor and speed control can be used with an inverter that produces a sine wave. It cannot be used with an inverter that produces a square wave.
